There are 2000 species of fleas on planet earth. Fleas are wingless and have tough shiny bodies covered in bristles. They are laterally flattened insects. Their mouthparts are modified for sucking blood. Adult fleas are sensitive to heat. They use their antennae to sense the body heat of a passing mammal or the presence of a mammal’s exhaled carbon dioxide breath. Fleas are ectoparasites.

They live on the outside of hosts, such as humans, dogs, cats and birds, and feed on the host’s blood.

Many fleas are vectors of diseases. The rodent flea carried the bacterium that caused the bubonic plague in Europe in the 1300’s.

Females will leave their host to lay sticky eggs in the hosts nest or burrow or carpets and rugs. Pupation takes place in a cocoon. The pupae remain in the cocoon until a potential host is nearby. Adult fleas suck blood from their hosts, although they are able to survive for long periods without a blood meal. The larvae are scavengers and will feed off the host’s dried blood, the excrement of the adult fleas and other detritus.

Management

To treat the pest infestation effectively, the following areas need to be treated. Cupboards, mattresses, couches, carpets, wooden floors, storerooms, garages, staff quarters, Wendy Houses animal kennels, baskets and bedding. An insect growth regulator is mixed together with BioKill Insecticide. The BioKill will kill the fleas, and the growth regulator will stunt the development of hatching flea larvae. The mixture is applied directly into and onto all the areas mentioned above. You are not required to unpack any cupboards or vacate the premises during treatment. Do not wash the treated areas after the treatment. BioKill is odourless, non-staining, bio-degradable and not harmful to humans and animals.

We recommend that all mattresses, couches, carpets, wooden floors and kennels be vacuumed thoroughly the day after treatment. Thereafter, remove the bag from the vacuum cleaner and burn the bag.

Depending on the severity of the infestation, many dying or dead insects may be evident for a few days after the treatment. Should the infestation found to be severe, a follow-up treatment may be required within 4 to 6 weeks, and then once or twice a year thereafter.
