Fishmoth or silverfish vary in size (4 to 15mm), and are covered with closely fitting overlapping scales. They have compound eyes, but no simple eyes. Their bodies are flat. Some species have enzymes enabling them to digest cellulose.

This means that they can survive on a diet of paper products such as books and the glue of book bindings, magazines, and cardboard. Starched clothing and dry foodstuffs are also not spared.

Most are nocturnal omnivores. This means that they are active at night, and eat any organic matter. Two domestic species occur in southern Africa. One is found across the entire region, in homes, offices, hotels, student residences, hospitals and filing storerooms. The other prefers moist regions and is found in the south-western Cape region. Reproduction takes place at any time of the year. Eggs are laid in crevices. The incubation period depends on availability of food and on the temperature. They young look like the mature insects and once matured, their lifespan may be as long as five years.

Management

To treat the pest infestation effectively, the entire interior of all cupboards need to be sprayed. All picture frames, skirting boards, bookshelves and storage areas also must be sprayed. We use BioKill Insecticide which is extremely effective against fishmoth. The product is applied directly into and onto all the areas mentioned above. You are not required to unpack any cupboards or vacate the premises during treatment. Do not wash the treated areas after the treatment. BioKill is odourless, non-staining, bio-degradable and not harmful to humans and animals.

Depending on the severity of the infestation, many dying or dead insects may be evident for a few days after the treatment. Should the infestation found to be severe, a follow-up treatment may be required within 4 to 6 weeks, and then once or twice a year thereafter
